Master the art of gifting this festive season

SNA HIGHLIGHS

In today’s e-commerce age, the online holiday rush can come with unforeseen delays. These can impact timely deliveries, dashing expectations when your thoughtfully chosen gift gets caught up in the logistics whirlwind.

Picture this: you’re planning to surprise your mother with the scented candle of her dreams. However, with the high volumes of shipments during the festive season, the gift arrives late. Not what you were hoping for, is it?

That’s why it is always a good idea to click and ship your gifts early, in the lead-up to the busy holiday season. Here are three more why shopping early is a good idea…

1. Finding the perfect gift takes time

During the festive season, there is a greater chance that the gifts you’re looking for could sell out quickly , as almost 50% of people were already shopping by October . Whether you’re searching for unique handcrafted items from small businesses, fashionable clothing, or popular tech gadgets, shopping early is one of the best ways to get everything on your wish list.

“Early gift planning also means more time to find personalised gifts,” says Taarek Hinedi, vice president of FedEx Express Middle East and Africa Operations. “Adding hand-written messages, engraving a name on a piece of jewellery, customising a t-shirt design, or combining multiple items for a one-of-a-kind gift box can make your family and friends feel truly valued and appreciated.”

During the busiest shopping period of the year, choose the ideal gifts early and ship them as soon as possible. What’s more, being proactive can also save you money, as it gives you more time to shop around and take advantage of promotions or other discounts .

2. Simply put, it’s first come, first served

With the festive season approaching, online shopping is expected to surge . E-commerce is expanding at an impressive pace throughout Southern Africa, thanks to the widespread adoption of smartphones and digital payments .

And despite us being recognised as some of the most frugal shoppers globally , it‘s anticipated people will still be willing to spend money on gifts during the holiday shopping season .

“This surge in e-commerce demand places immense strain on international shipping channels,” reveals Hinedi. “Delicate gifts that cross continents may become caught in a complex web of customs regulations, and unpredictable delays. Warehouse capacities are stretched to their limits, while congestions at ports and airports can make timely delivery a challenge.”

When you shop early, you are more likely to have an on-time and cost-effective delivery, even at the receiver’s most convenient location and time. Considering today’s busy lifestyle, it is reassuring to have the peace of mind of knowing that your gift has arrived at its destination.

3. Gifting is in our DNA

Across Africa, gifting is a cultural norm, a form of art . It is a gesture many can understand, which embodies our historical values of generosity and hospitality. Throughout the year, gifting is widespread amongst family members, friends, colleagues, and partners to demonstrate love and gratitude.

“While finding gifts that perfectly suit their recipients is essential, the right timing is equally important. On-time delivery shows you care enough to go the extra mile, meticulously orchestrating every detail, to brighten someone’s day,” says Hinedi. “Ensuring that your thoughtful presents arrive punctually leaves no room for disappointment. The action, not the intention alone, elevates a simple gift into a memorable experience, strengthening relationships and making them more meaningful.”

Timing is everything, and shipping gifts early bridges the distance, allowing those far from home to join in the festivities.
